Report: Benghazi 'Mastermind' Due in US Soon

Monday, 23 June 2014 01:22 PM EDT

The suspected mastermind of the deadly attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi is expected to arrive in the United States aboard the USS New York by the end of the week, NBC News reported.

Ahmed Abu Khattala, who was captured by U.S. special forces in Libya, is expected to be arraigned in a U.S. criminal court on terrorism charges related to the deaths of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, who were killed in the Sept. 11, 2012 siege by Muslim extremists.

Khattala has reportedly been speaking openly with FBI and Justice Department interrogators, as they seek to find out what he knows about planned or past attacks, as well as the Islamic militia that he helped to lead.

As of last week, he had not been read his Miranda rights, a sign that officials are more focused on gathering terrorism intelligence as opposed to seeking evidence admissible in court.

Khattala, who had been hiding in plain sight in Benghazi, was seized by a small group of Navy SEALs with the help of two FBI agents and Army Delta Force commandos.

It is not known which port the USS New York, a transport landing vessel, is destined for or which city Khattala will be arraigned in.
