Sen. Ben Sasse lashed out Sunday at President Donald Trump's attack on the federal judge who shot down an executive order on immigration from seven Muslim-majority nations, declaring that America has only "real judges."
In an interview with ABC News' "This Week," the Nebraska Republican dismissed Trump's dismissive tweet about Judge James Robart as a "so-called judge."
"I don't understand language like that," Sasse said of the attack.
"We don't have so-called presidents. We don’t have so–called judges. We don’t have so-called senators. We have three people from different branches of government who take an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution. We have real judges."
Sasse has been critical of the president in the past, particularly during the campaign,
but was more measured on Trump's executive order itself.
"It was done in a clunky enough way that initial weekend," he said. "We know we're not at war with all Muslims. We have to have a long-term focus... the administration has taken some important steps to improve upon the clunkiness of the initial weekend."
