Sen. Barrasso: Obamacare 'Held Together with Duct Tape, Chicken Wire'

By    |   Sunday, 29 September 2013 02:07 PM EDT

Physicians-turned-politicians on Sunday debated the merits and flaws of Obamacare and neither diagnosis was reassuring.

Sen. John Barrasso, a Wyoming Republican, said the insurance exchanges that are supposed to provide affordable healthcare "are being held together with duct tape and chicken wire."

While Democrat Howard Dean, former Vermont government and presidential hopeful, defended Barack Obama's signature legislation, he conceded, "There are going to be some glitches."

Opposing the president's healthcare plan "is outrageous," and Republicans who resist it "look really stupid," Dean said.

Dean also predicted that small businesses would have no option but to "dump their employees into the exchanges," adding, "I think that's a good thing."

"To separate employment from health insurance, that's something conservatives have wanted to do for a long time until recently, and I think that's going to happen as a result of this bill," Dean said.

Barrasso disagreed that dumping employees into a taxpayer-funded program that can barely function was the prognosis for which most Americans were hoping.

"There's going to be sticker shock," Barrasso said. "It's going to be harder for people to get what they want, which is the care they need, from a doctor they want, at a lower cost."
