While the vote was still too close to call shortly after the polls closed in Virginia, Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour predicted that Mitt Romney can beat President Obama without carrying the state, but that the Republican has a good chance of coming out on top in the Old Dominion.
“I really believe the key to the state is whether Romney cuts Obama’s margin below a certain margin in the northern Virginia suburbs,” Barbour said on CNBC, acknowledging that it will be hard for Romney to win without taking Virginia.
“It’s not impossible but it’s very hard,” he said. “I think Virginia is going to be very, very close. I think it’s going to be razor thin.”
Barbour, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, also predicted that Romney will do well in the key battleground state of Florida where another close contest is under way.
“You’ve got the whole West Coast that diminishes the margin that comes out of Dade, Palm Beach, and Broward,” he said of the Sunshine State. “Then you get in the I-4 corridor where most elections are decided. I think you’ll come out of all of that with Romney slightly behind, and then he will win the state in the north and particularly the northwest.”
