Iranian hackers were behind a cyberattack on a 20-foot-high dam in the leafy New York City suburb of Westchester in 2013, the Obama administration will reveal next week, CNN reports.

U.S. officials told CNN the Justice Department is set to indict the hackers who cracked the computer system at the Bowman Avenue Dam, a concrete structure that controls of the flow of Blind Brook in Rye.

Luckily, the hackers only gained access to "some back office systems, not the operational systems" of the barrier, according to CNN. U.S. investigators determined the attack was carried out by hackers working for the Iranian government.

U.S. officials told CNN the attack in Rye occurred as Iranian hackers attempted other infiltrations of American financial institutions.

Last year, President Barack Obama said the problem of cybersecurity hacks targeting the U.S. government is going to accelerate. He noted that part of the problem is the U.S. has very old systems for detecting intrusions and said they must be updated.
