Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina warns Newsmax TV that “there will be a tremendous backlash” if President Barack Obama unilaterally deactivates a third of the nation’s nuclear arsenal without congressional approval.
“What kind of signals are we sending? Our nuclear deterrent arsenal needs to be modernized,” Graham, a GOP member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, tells Newsmax in an exclusive interview. “The threats we’re facing are changing. They’re ever-changing.”
The president is exploring opportunities to achieve the reductions in infrastructure and capability he seeks – including a drawdown to 1,000 weapons – without seeking the advice and consent of the Senate that international treaties require.
The notion, Graham says, reflects a disastrous foreign policy by the Obama White House.
“Radical Islam is not dead with bin Laden,” Graham tells Newsmax. “It is regenerating. They’re on the march. They overrun our consulate. They killed the first ambassador in 33 years.
The senator adds, referring to last week’s bombings at the Boston Marathon that killed three and injured more than 250, “We’re acting like it was a common crime.”
“Syria’s in flames. Iraq is falling apart,” he tells Newsmax. “I cannot tell you how worried I am that the Iranians are going to acquire nuclear capability by the end of this year.”

The only way to beat back these threats, Graham says, is for the GOP — “the moral opposition” — “to step up our game in holding the Obama administration accountable for what are very dangerous national-security policy choices.”
