Democratic political consultant David Axelrod, who served as a senior adviser and strategist on President Barack Obama’s two presidential campaigns, will be joining NBC News as a political analyst, the network said Tuesday.

Axelrod will contribute to newscasts on both NBC News and its cable network affiliate MSNBC. He will also contribute to other NBC digital platforms as well.

Since leaving his role of senior adviser to the president in February 2011, the University of Chicago alumnus has been named director of the school’s new Institute of Politics. He is also a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Harris School of Public Policy.

Axelrod will be joining Steve Schmidt, an adviser to Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele and former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, who also serve as NBC political analysts.
