WASHINGTON, Feb 1 (Reuters) - U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, a Nobel Prize winner who oversaw President Barack Obama's efforts to spur green energy projects, is resigning from the cabinet, a senior administration official confirmed on Friday.

Chu's resignation was widely expected. His departure sets the stage for Obama to announce a new team to lead a push to address climate change. Obama also has vacancies to fill at the Interior Department and the Environmental Protection Agency. (Reporting by Jeff Mason and Roberta Rampton; Editing by Vicki Allen)
