Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., shredded GOP Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw on Thursday for attacking freshman firebrand Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., over 9/11 terror remarks that enraged conservatives and slammed a New York Post cover that referenced it.
“You refuse to cosponsor the 9/11 Victim’s Compensation Fund, yet have the audacity to drum resentment towards Ilhan w/completely out-of-context quotes,” the progressive Ocasio-Cortez argued. “In 2018, right-wing extremists were behind almost ALL US domestic terrorist killings. Why don’t you go do something about that?”
The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund was created in the wake of the 9/11 attacks but is due to expire in December 2020 without additional authorization from Congress.
Crenshaw’s most recent digs at Omar stemmed from her speech last month before the Council on American Islamic Relations in Los Angeles.
“CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something, and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties,” Omar said. CAIR was founded in 1994.
The remarks created a firestorm among Republicans, with Crenshaw particularly outspoken.
Omar herself pushed back at Crenshaw’s criticism, calling it “dangerous incitement given the death threats I face.”
“We are ALL Americans,” she said.
The New York post on Thursday ran a cover with Omar's quote over a photo of the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers and the line "Here's your something: 2,977 people dead by terrorism."
Ocasio-Cortez refused to quote the Post cover, but added on Twitter: "Here’s 1 fact: @IlhanMN is a cosponsor of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. She‘s done more for 9/11 families than the GOP who won’t even support healthcare for 1st responders – yet are happy to weaponize her faith."
