Anderson Cooper has gone soft on presidential executioner Kathy Griffin. The CNN host who first condemned her for posing with a severed head closely resembling President Donald Trump, now says he wishes nothing but good for her.
Anderson opened up on the Griffin beheading fiasco during a show with Andy Cohen at the Comerica Theatre on Friday night.
According to AZ Central, the 50-year-old Anderson said he and Griffin had been friends for a long time. (The two often co-hosted CNN's New Year's Eve program, but Griffin was fired from her position shortly after the beheading photos were released.)
"I wanted nothing but good things for her," he told the audience on Friday.
"I don't want anybody’s career to be destroyed because they do something unfortunate and inappropriate. But yeah, I thought what she did was inappropriate."
That followed previous remarks in which Anderson condemned Griffin's stunt. Taking to social media, he announced his distaste, calling the photo shoot disgusting and inappropriate.
Shortly after the beheading images were released, Donald Trump responded on social media, saying Griffin should be ashamed of herself.
"My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!" he tweeted.
Addressing the issue at a press conference held earlier this month, Griffin said she felt horrible about the incident.
"If I could redo the whole thing I would have a blow up doll and no ketchup," she said. "I make mistakes… but I wanted to say, if you don't stand up, you will get run-over."
Griffin added that she felt the president and his family were personally trying to ruin her.
"This is America and you shouldn't have to die for it. The death threats I am getting are constant, they are detailed, they are serious and they are specific and, today it's me and tomorrow it could be you."
