A majority of Americans said they would be in favor of the U.S. engaging in military action if North Korea attacked South Korea, according to a poll by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

Favoring military action against North Korea crossed all political affiliations.

Sixty-two percent of all Americans in the poll support the use of U.S. troops if North Korea invaded South Korea.

  • Republicans: 70 percent.
  • Democrats: 59 percent.
  • Independents: 61 percent.

North Korea is becoming a greater concern to many voters in the poll. Seventy-five percent of Americans in the poll suggest that North Korea is a major threat to the U.S. — up from 55 percent two years ago.

Support for U.S. forces to come to the aid of South Korea has shown a noticeable increase: 62 percent favor such a move, up from 47 percent in 2015.

As for other methods to take action against North Korea:

  • Seventy-six percent of Americans approve of ramping up sanctions against North Korea.
  • Sixty-eight percent of Americans support sanctioning Chinese banks and other businesses that work with North Korea.

Both parties agree on ramping up sanctions against the Kim Jong-un-led country:

  • Republicans: 84 percent.
  • Democrats: 76 percent.

Few in the poll believe North Korea should be allowed to keep nuclear weapons.

  • Twenty-one percent would support an agreement in which North Korea halted its nuclear program, but kept nuclear weapons.
  • Eleven percent said they would support a deal to let North Korea have more nuclear weapons.

The Chicago Council's survey was based on data obtained between June 27 and July 19 among 2,020 adults in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.
