Amazon Patents 'Big Brother' Tracking Device

It what sounds like a plot twist out of George Orwell’s "Nineteen Eighty-Four," Amazon has patented designs for a wristband that can track the movements of its warehouse clerks and use vibrations to prod them in different directions.

The device being developed by the retail giant would help increase the productivity of workers who fulfill the orders of customers shopping its online store, The Guardian reports.

It would use ultrasonic tracking to pinpoint the exact location of an employee’s hands as they retrieve items from stock and vibrate to point them in right direction.

The Guardian said a "less generous interpretation would be that the wristbands provide Amazon management with new workplace surveillance capabilities that can identify the workers wasting time scratching, fidgeting or dilly-dallying."

In Orwell’s classic dystopian novel, residents of a futuristic super-state are the victims of round-the-clock government surveillance and manipulation by an unseen figure called Big Brother.
