With new Amazon Key deliveries, drivers will be able to leave packages inside a customer's door using the special smart lock and code system. Rollout of Amazon Key begins next month in 37 cities.
Delivery drivers will never have an actual key to access anyone’s home, but will get a code via an app that will let them unlock the door electronically for five minutes, USA Today reported. The process will also be captured on video, which customers can watch live or later on a recording.
Amazon Key customers will have to buy a smart lock and Cloud Cam camera to use the service, which is only available to Prime members, USA Today reported. Drivers will knock on the door first before using the app to unlock the door if no one answers.
Amazon has been testing the service for several months and thinks it could solve the problem of package theft and security.
The CloudCam camera can also be used for general home surveillance and will come with an optional subscription service for home monitoring, The Verge reported.
The announcement of the new Amazon Key deliveries comes just weeks after Walmart announced it would begin a similar in-home delivery service for groceries. Neither one was received well on Twitter, with followers roasting the idea of letting random people unlock your door and put packages inside your house.
