Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is donating $33 million to a scholarship program for Dreamers – the undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, The Hill is reporting.
The money is being given by Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, to TheDream.US, a fund set up to award the college scholarships, according to The Hill.
"MacKenzie and I are honored to be able to help today’s Dreamers by funding these scholarships," Bezos said in a statement.
The donation is the largest in the program’s history. TheDream.US was set up in 2014 by Donald Graham, former publisher of The Washington Post, The Hill said. Bezos purchased the newspaper in 2013.
The website noted the Dreamers have been covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals (DACA) program, which President Donald Trump has moved to rescind. A possible bipartisan deal to replace it is in question after Trump rejected the proposal, the website said.
