Amazon's Alexa is going out on the road.
The giant online retailer has partnered with a number of car companies to work with them on integrating the smart voice assistant into new vehicles, Business Insider reported – and Ford last January became the first in the United States to roll out the technology in select cars.
Owners of the Ford Focus Electric, Fusion Energi, and the C-MAX Energi can currently use Alexa while at home to perform certain vehicle functions, including locking and starting the car remotely, the outlet reported.
This summer, according to Business Insider, Ford owners with SYNC 3 access will also be able to use Alexa in the car to do things like check the weather, play audiobooks, and even control smart home devices.
Business Insider writer Cadie Thompson reported she was "pretty impressed" at the home-to-vehicle feature in a test drive of a 2017 Ford Fusion Energi.
Thompson reported there are six tasks Alexa can perform with a voice command: controlling the locks; checking the vehicle's range, both for electric and gas; remotely starting and stopping the vehicle; checking the odometer; checking the battery charge; and checking the tire pressure.
Once Ford rolls out Alexa's vehicle-to-home integration, owners will be able to use voice commands to control all of Alexa's skills, the outlet reported.
"This is the tip of the iceberg," Ken Washington, Ford's vice president of research and advanced engineering, said in January, Business Insider reported.
Volkswagen announced in January it plans to integrate Alexa into its new vehicles, and BMW and Hyundai have also said they'll offer Alexa-enabled features in select cars, Business Insider reported.
