Victim rights attorney Gloria Allred, who is representing a woman who says Alabama senatorial candidate Roy Moore sexually abused her and signed her high school yearbook, would not confirm Tuesday whether she'd turn over the signature for a third-party analysis before the Dec. 12 election, but she wants to hear Moore testify about it under oath.
"We immediately said if the United States Senate Select Committee on Ethics would hold a hearing, we would be very happy to turn the yearbook over to have it examined by an independent [analyst]," Allred told CNN's "New Day" co-anchor Alisyn Camerota.
Moore's campaign has denied that he signed an affectionate note in the yearbook of Allred's client Beverly Young-Nelson, who says Moore assaulted her in a locked car when she was a 16-year-old waitress at a restaurant called the Old Hickory House in Gadsden, Alabama.
The Republican candidate's defenders also have claimed that the restaurant did not exist at the time Nelson said she was attacked, but Allred called those claims "misleading."
"Good reporters found through the public records in the library that, in fact, the Old Hickory House was a restaurant at the time that Beverly said that she worked there, so, that one has been completely demolished," said Allred.
"Also CNN, through the good reporting I saw hours ago, had several women who alleged that they worked there and had seen Roy Moore there."
Allred pointed out that after the Moore camp started demanding a handwriting analysis on the yearbook, she wrote letters to the Senate Judiciary and Ethics committees, asking them to hold hearings, even though Moore has not been elected yet.
"I have spoken to a former United States senator and on Sunday to a former very key member of the Republican Congress, both of whom said 'you're absolutely right, Gloria,'" she told Camerota.
"If the committees wanted to have a hearing now, even before he's elected or even if he's never elected but is a candidate, they could do so. It's politics. They can hold a hearing if they want to talk about whether a hangnail was caused by NAFTA. They could do it. "
As part of the hearings, Allred said she and her client also want the committees to subpoena Moore, as her client Nelson would "voluntarily testify under oath" that Moore signed her yearbook.
"He has not at all said to any reporter, at least no reporter has reported it, that he would testify under oath," said Allred.
If no Senate committee takes on an investigation, Allred admitted she could use a third-party handwriting analysis, but "the key person is Roy Moore."
But in the absence of a hearing before either committee, it's important to note that the Ethics Committee will hold a hearing if Moore is elected, and at that time there would be testimony from Nelson and most likely others, the attorney said.
Allred acknowledged it would be "very good information" for voters to have if the yearbook signature was valid, if Moore would be "willing to raise his hand and testify under oath" if he assaulted Nelson or another victim, Leigh Corfman who says she was assaulted when she was 14.
"Will the voters believe women who allege that they were assaulted, when they were children, under the age of majority or will they accept the denial of one powerful man?" said Allred.
