Iran will test fire live missiles in a military exercise ordered by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to a report.

The Washington Free Beacon cites a Fars News Agency story, a media outlet controlled by Iran's government.

The "launch of missiles will be conducted according to plans and as per the approval of commander-in-chief of the armed forces Supreme Leader [Ali Khamenei]," said Major General Seyed Hassan Firouzabadi, chief of General Command Headquarters of Iran's Armed Forces, according to the Free Beacon.

The military show of force comes as Congress prepares to read through and vote on the Iran nuclear deal, which was completed in July. Congress will vote to approve it or shoot it down next month.

The Free Beacon reports that politicians in Iran's parliament have been pushing for missile drills to display the country's military might and to prevent the U.S. from attacking it.

"If we hold a military drill and show the level of the country's defense preparedness, especially in the field of missiles, then the threatening language of Americans will change," parliament member Seyyed Hossein Naqavi-Hosseini said.

Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy Commander Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, meanwhile, warned the U.S. that Iran is ready to launch a "powerful response" to any military action taken against it.

"The western media are mocking at the U.S. for speaking of 'on the table options (against Iran)' because the U.S. always utters some words without the ability to materialize them and … we are ready to give such a powerful response to the slightest move of the U.S. that it won't be able to make any other moves," Fadavi said in a Fars News Agency report.

The news of Iran's intentions to conduct live missile drills comes a day after Russia held war games with Iran.

Last month, Col. Derek Harvey, director of the Global Initiative on Civil Society and Conflict, told Newsmax TV he believes Russia could be hiding in Iran's shadow.

"Well, he's pushing and prodding and looking for opportunities and threatening and coercing the eastern countries in Europe, the Baltic countries," Harvey said of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
