Excessive Exercise Linked to Macular Degeneration

A study published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology showed that men who exercise vigorously five or more days each week are 54 percent more likely to develop macular degeneration than those who do not.

Macular degeneration is a progressive deterioration of the eye’s retina, and is the most common cause of vision loss in late life.

This surprising finding may be due to the effect of extensive exercise on the eye’s sensitive vascular membranes that surround the retina, which is located in the central area located in the back side of the eye.

Heavy exercisers should consider seeing an eye doctor if they become concerned.
