Scott Walker: GOP Should Help People Hurt by Obamacare

By    |   Wednesday, 20 November 2013 11:19 PM EST

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says his fellow Republicans should work to help people suffering from the failed Obamacare rollout, and should make sure not to be gleeful about President Barack Obama's problems.

"We need to be joining with Americans, whether they were for or against the Affordable Care Act, and join in their frustration, not in any way look like we're relishing this or if Obamacare goes over the cliff we should be the ones pushing it," Walker said Wednesday on CNN's "Piers Morgan Live."

Republicans should try to help everyday Americans find a better alternative, he said.

While it is important to draw attention to the problem, "you don't need a Republican to point that out." Average people are seeing the program's failures every day, he said.

Morgan asked whether the problems with Obamacare justified the 16-day government shutdown in October.

Walker replied that he said in August that the federal government is too big and takes on too many responsibilities for individuals' lives. But, he added, the few things that are necessary should work.

"I had a difficult time justifying that making it work meant shutting it down," he said.

Walker has said he thinks the ideal GOP presidential candidate in 2016 would be someone who has served as a governor. Morgan asked whether that statement was meant to clear people such as Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin from the field and elevate himself.

Walker said he was responding to a question when he made the statement, and that all of the names mentioned are qualified. Governors, however, have been leading reform, he said.

One exception to that rule, he said, is Ryan, who also has led reform efforts. Ryan is a fellow Wisconsin resident.
