Jalyn for Prostate: Generic and Alternative Options

By    |   Wednesday, 06 July 2016 05:43 PM

Jalyn is a combination of the generic drugs dutasteride and tamsulosin to treat an enlarged prostate. Alternative options include taking these drugs alone, using other medications, or trying supplemental possibilities.

Dutasteride prevents testosterone from converting into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, which promotes the development of an enlarged prostate, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. The tamsulosin in Jalyn relaxes prostate and bladder neck muscles to improve urine flow, Drugs.com explains.

Jalyn has the benefit of two generic drugs in one medication. Many men may find relief from taking either dutasteride or tamsulosin alone, but combining the two appears to have slightly better results at reducing symptoms, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Some patients might seek alternative options because of side effects, which occur in many medications for an enlarged prostate. Adverse effects for Jalyn include erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory dysfunction, decreased libido, dizziness, and breast swelling or tenderness.

If Jalyn isn't for you, ask a doctor to recommend other medications with similar actions. Drugs that relax muscles in the prostate and bladder to reduce urinary problems include Uroxatral (alfuzosin), Cardura (doxazosin), Rapaflo (silodosin), and Hytrin (terazosin).

Avodart is another brand name for the generic dutasteride, which reduces the size of the prostate by blocking hormones. Proscar (finasteride), another drug that prevents prostate enlargement, and Avodart take about three to six months to relieve symptoms, Healthline notes.

Lifestyle changes also can be alternative options to Jalyn and generic drugs for some men to relieve urinary symptoms. Recommendations include limiting beverages in the evening, drinking no more than two quarts of fluid a day, and limiting or avoiding alcohol and caffeine, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Lifestyle factors also include trying to urinate at least once every three hours, staying active, and maintaining a healthy weight to reduce the risk of urinary symptoms.

Saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol are among the supplements some men use to treat prostate problems, but more research is needed on their effectiveness.
