Where You Can Find Confederate Flag Flying in West Virginia

By    |   Wednesday, 02 September 2015 10:14 AM EDT

West Virginia became a state during the Civil War when residents in the northwest area of Virginia wanted a separate state when Virginia seceded from the Union, but the legitimacy of that act has been contested ever since, and the Confederate flag can be spotted throughout the state.

Although West Virginians’ loyalties remain split in the days since the Civil War, officials and residents have been concerned about the display of the Confederate flag, since the Civil War is considered "a touchy subject" in West Virginia according to The State Journal.

Vote Now: Should the Confederate Flag Be Removed From All Government Buildings?

In West Virginia, debate over representations of the Confederate flag really has found its forum in public schools.

In Ona, West Virginia, one student was reprimanded for wearing clothing bearing the Confederate flag. The student was threatened with suspension if he continued to wearing such articles. His mother spoke out against the policy at Cabell Midland High School to the local news, WSAZ 3.

In a neighboring county, parents flocked to a school board meeting after reports of students being banned from flying the flag from their vehicles as well as on the dress, according to WOWK-TV. Ultimately, the Wayne County School Board of Education did not have a mandate in place against the practice, but supported the Tolsia High School principal's authority to act, according to a WSAZ 3 report.

Parents of one Bluefield, West Virginia, middle-school student claimed their son was disciplined to point of expulsion for wearing Confederate flag-adorned jewelry, according to the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.
