Obama Out of the Limelight

As the democratic debates for a 2020 presidential candidate unfold, it seems the past administration of Obama overshadows much of what they want to do. Many of his unfavorable policies are being challenged with much chagrin. Obamacare didn’t fulfill its promises while healthcare remains mired in political inaction due to its costs.

Obama remember was depicted by Joe Biden as the "good Negro" — "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice looking guy." As I guess opposed to the rest of us. Even Obama told the Black Caucus on September 24, 2011, “I expect all of you to march with me and press on. Take off your bedroom slippers, put on your marching shoes. Shake it off. Stop complaining and grumbling, stop crying. We are going to press on. We’ve got work to do, CBC.”

On Obama’s watch, the funding for historically black colleges and universities (HBCU’s) was reduced and the sidelining of the Small Business Administration's (SBA) regional offices to help minority entrepreneurs and businesses obliterated. Immigration push backs were brutal but often out of the media. Gay marriage was pushed down the throat of a black population still not on its legs and fast losing two parent marriages of a male and female as an expectation, showing over 70 percent of such in the 30’s through 50’s versus now approaching less than 30 percent.

The benign neglect of previous Democratic administrations for black America was a resultant reward for their unfailing as well as too often unquestioning loyalty. Was Hillary Clinton to be just a place holder who in referring to our children noted, “They are often the kinds of kids that are called super predators”? This emanates from the Clinton’s 1994 support for legislation demanding that after 3 strikes, you’re locked up for life, which is a large factor in black male incarcerations. The emerging neoliberalism now rapidly runs past socialism to a "for real" government welfare state printing more useless dollars to cover its cost.

Has Kamala Harris’ handling of prisoners veered far from this, or her stereotyping marijuana (MJ) use to her Jamaican heritage to the chagrin of her father, or her seeming lack of appreciation for decriminalization of MJ? Is this any difference than Obama’s reference to inhaling MJ and noting he did “maybe a little blow”? Two wrongs don’t make it right, especially when it is illegal.

Corey Booker as a Senator from New Jersey has a serious pedigree via education but is a little thin in economic and political contributions, though he is quick to criticize the incumbent president.

The sad thing is, so many in black leadership have built their legacies on pandering to our perceived "victimhood," not our empowerment.

Even those in Baltimore, not reported by the media, told Al Sharpton to leave as they like others are beginning to appreciate words without works are meaningless. Though the Trump perceived insulting manner is harsh, a nerve is being hit on the state of urban areas such as Chicago, Baltimore, L.A., etc. where crime reigns, drugs proliferate, education is failing, and despair blankets with gloom. Got an answer for folks are now listening?

As the Democratic National Committee struggles to fund raise even with its large overseers, Obama emerges from the shadows tapping into their donor base for his “When We Vote” effort.

The insistence on the lie that African Americans gained the right to vote by Lyndon B. Johnson signing the 1965 Voting Rights Act is a myth. That constitutional right was not and has not been lost but awaits the needed exorcism in people’s heads making them willing to go vote in whatever time frame is available. Obama likely appreciates, as did Hillary Clinton, that in the context of the DNC, he who controls donor lists and data is de facto king of the party.
