Facebook Enters the Job-Board Market

By    |   Friday, 16 November 2012 08:08 AM EST

Looks like job recruiters gave a big thumbs up to Facebook, as the social-networking company has now branched out to post job listings.

The company released a Social Jobs Partnership application working with the U.S. Department of Labor and other government agencies. Other aggregators already working on the platform include Work4Labs, BranchOut, Jobvite, DirectEmployers and Monster.com.

Wednesday, the first day the app went live, saw 1.7 million jobs go up on Facebook, Forbes reported.

The company is not making any money from the application yet, according to Cnet, so this doesn't mean it is getting into the jobs-listing business just yet.

While a spokesperson for the social-networking giant insisted Facebook is not now part of the recruiting industry, many others believe the company has jumped in big time. The app allows users the ability to search for a job by location, industry and skill. They can then apply to them directly through Facebook, and share the jobs to within their social network.

"Today's launch of the Social Jobs Application highlights what we've known all along — that both recruiters and job seekers benefit when jobs are posted where candidates spend their time, and research overwhelmingly tells us that this is on Facebook," said Stephane Le Viet, CEO of Work4Labs.

"Undoubtedly, there will be an acceleration of the shift to social media as the primary channel to find a job with the extraordinary push of this consortium. We are fully committed to making the Social Jobs Application on Facebook the best possible resource for connecting candidates and companies."

Facebook explained it was entering the market because half of employers in the United States use the social network as an informational source on potential candidates during the hiring process. In addition, over half the companies already using Facebook said they anticipated using the service even more over time to engage with potential employees.

Work4Labs posted 2.2 million jobs to Facebook over the past 18 months because that's where potential employees are, the firm states.

Le Viet believes the current application is an early test of job recruiting on the platform and will create a massive public relations buzz by allowing users already on the site more options to stay and look for jobs in addition to keeping up with friends and colleagues.

One company certain to take notice and wonder about the future is LinkedIn. While most of LinkedIn 175 million users are older and college educated, their sheer number is dwarfed by Facebook’s 1 billion users, Forbes noted.

LinkedIn is a trusted brand whose sole purpose is business networking and it is unclear whether older employees will migrate over to Facebook.
