There is an old story that goes like this:
The preacher was making the rounds and visiting the people in his small, rural town. He went out to visit a farmer who hadn’t been to church in a while. As the preacher pulled up in his car, he saw the farmer working out in his field, so he went out to meet him.
When he got to the farmer, he said, “You and God sure have done a lot with this field.” To which the farmer replied, “Yeah, you should have seen it when God had it all to himself.”
Now most of you know of my ministry background. So I’m certainly not poking fun at God or what He does. But the farmer’s comment certainly goes to show that we have our part to play.
I’ve found that God does the most for people with goals that are striving to meet them. The Bible talks about how God will “bless what we set our hands to.” But that assumes we’re purposefully setting our hands to something!
So as this year winds down and you have a bit of free time over the Christmas and New Year holidays, I’d urge you to lay out some goals for yourself to accomplish in 2013. Write them on paper or put them on a Word document on your computer.
Going through an exercise where you have to not only think but also write or type it out causes you to get your dreams out of you and onto paper or your computer screen. In doing this, it allows you to refine those goals if needed, but also it causes your focus to zone in on these dreams.
I’ve done this for years now and I must say that it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. Don’t go through life just punching a clock, going to work, taking the kids to school and doing it all over again. Make sure there is a decisive purpose that you’ve determined for your job, personal finances/investments, marriage, etc.
Then regularly talk about the goals with someone you trust, such as your spouse or close friend. Don’t tell everyone your goals or dreams. Many people will simply shoot them down. Talk them over with someone who will be your cheerleader throughout life as you go for these goals.
That is one thing I can say that I’ve got in my wife, Lisa. She is my cheerleader in life. Making me continue to push when I might give up otherwise. She’s strong when I’m not. So partner up with someone. Build a team to help you with your goals if you need.
I have four teams: two for work and two for my personal life. It has helped me to accomplish so much more than I ever would have on my own. You know, sometimes we teach people to be “independent” to a fault. If every man or woman is an island unto themselves, they won’t accomplish all that they should.
The only way you will reach your full potential is by having a team. That team might just consist of you and your spouse. One of my teams is that way. Another team could be a mastermind group that you attend. That’s one of the other groups in my life. Get people that speak into your life: your spouse, your pastor, your mastermind group, your close friend, etc.
It’s going to be more important than ever to have a concerted effort put forth with your finances and investments. Inflation is going up and the dollar continues to be diluted. That’s not going to change, and I believe that inflation will rise more in 2013 than it has in the past several years.
As it concerns your investing, if you don’t have a financial team, you should consider making me a part of your financial team by subscribing to my newsletter, the Ultimate Wealth Report.
