Mark Zuckerberg is telling some Meta middle managers they will no longer have any reports and need to find something productive to do, or leave, Bloomberg reports.
Individual contributor roles that managers who no longer have people reporting to them can transition to include coding, design and research.
Zuckerberg’s ultimatum, which Meta is internally calling “flattening,” comes on the heels of his declaring 2023 the “year of efficiency.”
In Meta’s second quarter earnings call, Zuckerberg told investors and analysts, “We’re working on flattening our org structure and removing some layers of middle management to make decisions faster, as well as deploying AI tools to help our engineers be more productive.
“As part of this, we’re going to be more proactive about cutting projects that aren’t performing or may no longer be as crucial,” the Meta CEO continued. “My main focus is on increasing the efficiency of how we execute our top priorities.”
Meta will break the news to middle managers in the coming weeks, sources told Bloomberg. Any job cuts will be on a case-by-case basis and be separate from annual reviews.
In November, Meta laid off 11,000 employees, or 13% of its workforce.
Meta shares are up about 53% year to date.
