A U.S. lawmaker pressing for hearings on insurer American International Group Inc.'s controversial payments to banks called on Friday for probes into Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's and former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's involvement in the matter.
Rep. Darrell Issa, the top Republican on the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said the panel's chairman should "obtain more information" from Paulson and Bernanke regarding the $62.1 billion paid to banks to liquidate American International Group, or AIG, credit default swaps at par value.
Issa had previously focused much of his attention on the role of current Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who was head of the New York Federal Reserve Bank at the time of the bailout in 2008.
