Poll: 71 Percent of Americans Support Minimum Wage Increase

By    |   Monday, 09 June 2014 10:53 PM EDT

As numerous states and cities move to raise their minimum wage, 71 percent of Americans favor an increase in the federal minimum wage as well, according to a CNNMoney poll.

Not surprisingly, 90 percent of Democrats support a hike. But a majority of Republicans—54 percent—do so as well.

President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats have proposed boosting the minimum wage to $10.10 from $7.25 currently.

In the poll, 36 percent said the minimum wage should be lifted to $10.10, while 19 percent said it should be lifted to a lower level, and 16 percent said it should be raised to a higher level.

Last week, Seattle's city council recently passed an increase to $15 an hour, which will make its minimum wage the highest in the country.

Michigan recently approved a hike to $9.25, Vermont approved one to $10.50 and Maryland to $10.10.

The $15 minimum wage in Seattle, which takes effect over several years, translates into an annual salary of $31,200. That would likely cover the average rent for a shared one-bedroom apartment, utilities, health insurance, groceries and an inexpensive mobile phone plan in Seattle, according to The Associated Press.

It put the cost of a typical one-bedroom apartment in the city at $1,400 a month, a gallon of gas at $3.94, bus fare at $2.50, a gallon of milk at about $3.60, a 16-ounce Starbucks latte at $3.35, and a pint of local beer at $4.50.
