Pope Francis' Life to Be Featured in Biopic

By    |   Monday, 02 September 2013 07:00 PM EDT

The life of Pope Francis will be the subject of a biopic, Variety reports.

The movie will be directed by Argentina's Alejandro Agresti. The pope, the former Jorge Mario Bergoglio, is a native of Argentina himself. The movie will be filmed in Spanish and Italian.

"A Priest's Tale" will focus on Francis' life from childhood until he was elected pope earlier this year. Argentine actor Rodrigo de la Serna is slated to play the pope.

Urgent: Should the Pope change the Catholic Church?

"More than a rapid biopic of key events, I’m more concerned with getting inside this very singular person, his decision to follow his vocation, and how he combined his faith and reason, having studied as a Jesuit for 14 years before being ordained," Agresti said.

While Catholics are an obvious audience for the film, Agresti said he thinks the film will appeal to others, too.

"Pope Francis is attempting to change things," he said. "He can be seen as revolutionary and interests non-Catholics as well."

"A Priest’s Tale" will be produced by Argentina’s Pampa Films and Spain’s Pentagrama. Agresti is known in the United States for directing "The Lake House," which starred Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock.
