Activists: Syrian Warplanes Bomb School, Killing at Least 15

Thursday, 01 May 2014 10:57 AM EDT

Syrian warplanes bombed a school in the al-Ansari neighborhood of eastern Aleppo early yesterday, killing at least 15 people, including six children, the activist Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The attack on the Ein Jalout school also left dozens injured and the death toll is expected to rise, the U.K.-based group said in a statement on its website. It released videos it said were taken at the scene, showing an empty classroom strewn with wood, rubble and blood and colorful paintings depicting the three-year war. One showed a tank driving up a hill and another depicted a child being executed in a ditch.

The artwork was part of an exhibition local children had been preparing, said an unidentified man in one of the videos.

Forces loyal to President Bashar Assad have been carrying out airstrikes and dropping barrel bombs in rebel-held districts of Aleppo for at least a year. The northern city, Syria’s largest and a financial hub, has seen some of the fiercest fighting of a war that has killed more than 150,000 people since starting in March 2011.

At least 10,000 of the dead are children, according to a United Nations report last month. More than 1 million are living as refugees and millions more are living displaced within the country.
