Lebanon’s military prosecutor has extended the detention of two suspects in Friday’s deadly car bombings in Tripoli, the Beirut Daily Star reported.

Military Prosecutor Saqr on Monday extended the duration of detention for sheikhs Abdel-Razzak Hammoud and Ahmad Gharib for two days in order to continue interrogating them in connection with the twin bombings that killed at least 47 people and wounded more than 500 outside the al-Salam and al-Taqwa mosques.

Both Hammoud and Gharib were apprehended Saturday. Gharib’s arrest was due to his appearance in surveillance video near Al-Salam Mosque at the time of that blast. He is said to be close to Syrian intelligence and is considered a link between Syrian operatives and Hashem Minkara, head of the Tripoli-based Islamic Tawheed Movement, which supports President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Sources said investigators have confirmed that the vehicle used in the blast that targeted the al-Salam mosque was a Ford model, but they have yet to determine the make of the vehicle used in the blast outside the al-Taqwa mosque.

Investigators are also trying to determine whether the cars were detonated remotely or whether timers were used, and they continue to study video footage from surveillance cameras near the blasts. .
