JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli Foreign Ministry has retracted an announcement that it is withdrawing the nomination of a settler leader as ambassador to Brazil.
Spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon says the earlier announcement "was an unfortunate administrative bureaucratic mistake."
Danny Dayan, a former chairman of a West Bank settler council, was nominated in August.
Brazil opposes West Bank settlements and has delayed accrediting Dayan.
Earlier Thursday, the Foreign Ministry announced it is seeking a new nominee.
Israel captured the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip — territories Palestinians claim for their future state — in the 1967 Mideast war. Israel withdrew its settlements from Gaza in 2005. Nearly 600,000 Israelis live in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
In 2010, Brazil recognized the state of Palestine along the pre-1967 lines.
