Egypt's Opposition Says Assailants Trashed Their Party

Wednesday, 06 June 2018 04:38 AM EDT

CAIRO (AP) — Leaders of a pro-democracy coalition that called for a boycott of Egypt's March presidential election say assailants chanting "long live Egypt!" have attacked a Ramadan party they held at a Cairo social club.

The Tuesday night incident was reported on social media by leaders of the Civil Democratic Movement. They posted photos purportedly showing overturned tables and chairs with food strewn on the ground. The gathering was an iftar, the sunset meal with which Muslims break their daylong fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi won a second term in the election, in which he faced no serious opposition after a number of potentially strong candidates were arrested or pressured into dropping out.

It was not immediately known who was behind the attack.
