Palestinian Rock Throwers Arrested at Holy site

Sunday, 20 April 2014 06:44 AM EDT

JERUSALEM — Israeli police say they entered the compound at Jerusalem's holiest site to disperse Palestinians who were throwing rocks.

Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police arrested 16 masked Palestinians who threw rocks and firecrackers as the site was opened to tourists on Sunday. Two officers were hurt.

The violence erupted as tourists packed Jerusalem's Old City for the Easter and Passover holidays.

The area is one of the most sensitive religious sites in the region and is a key issue at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinians conflict.

Jews call it the Temple Mount as it is the site of the two biblical Jewish temples, and the holiest place in Judaism.

Muslims call it the "Noble Sanctuary" and it is Islam's third-holiest site.

Israel captured the area from Jordan in the 1967 war.
