Egypt Detains 22 Islamist Women at Pro-Morsi Protest

By    |   Friday, 01 November 2013 06:24 AM EDT

Protests continued throughout Egypt Thursday, with 20 female supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood arrested following clashes with residents in a densely populated area of Alexandria, Ahram Online reported Thursday.

The violence in Alexandria began with protesters blocking a major road in the city and vandalizing store facades, triggering confrontations with shop owners in which both sides pelted one another with stones. Thus far there have been no reports of casualties.

On Wednesday, student protesters supporting ousted President Mohammed Morsithrew chairs, shattered windows and vandalized the walls of school buildings with graffiti attacking the interim government and Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, Al-Arabiya reported.

Ahram Online reported Wednesday that supporters of Morsi and the Brotherhood held captive the president of the university and some staff members.

That same day, authorities arrested Essam el-Erian, deputy leader of the Freedom and Justice party, widely regarded as the Brotherhood’s political arm, near Cairo, Fox News reported

Morsi was detained by authorities after his July 3 ouster as president and is in custody at a secret location. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday on charges of incitement to murder and violence.
