ElBaradei: Mubarak Could Go 'Quickly'

Friday, 28 January 2011 10:23 AM EST

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak could be forced to relinquish his 30-year rule over the country "very quickly," opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei told Vienna’s Profil magazine.

"Nobody thought that in Tunisia things would change overnight," Profil said in a pre-release of an ElBaradei interview that will be published on Jan. 31. "Things in the last days show that it can happen very quickly. If Mubarak continues like this, it will surely backfire."

ElBaradei, former head of the United Nations nuclear agency, returned to Egypt yesterday and said he would take part in today’s protest. His whereabouts weren’t immediately clear. Al-Jazeera reported that he had been detained, and then later said he had been prevented from leaving a mosque in Giza where he had gone for Friday prayers.
