An anti-Trump military veterans group says it is uniting with billionaire Democratic presidential candidate Tom Steyer to push members of Congress on impeachment, saying that President Donald Trump is not fit to serve.

"If he was a soldier he would definitely be facing a dishonorable discharge at this point," Jose Vasquez, executive director of Common Defense, told The Hill, adding that his group feels that "folks who put their lives on the line, particularly those who were combat vets, are just appalled at how Donald Trump's been proceeding and behaving."

The group says that Trump's attacks on minorities, his approach to military engagements, and his actions with Russian operatives mean he is unfit to remain in the White House.

Common Defense plans to target Democrats who are either veterans, represent large populations of veterans, and those on key committees, especially the Judiciary.

Veterans have "important stories to share," said Vasquez. We "can be persuasive to sort of build the support that's necessary."

Steyer launched his Need to Impeach initiative in 2017, and now has more than 8.3 million signatures on his impeachment petition.

Common Defense reportedly has about 150,000 members, but demographics show that veterans tend to be in a group that is more male, white, and older than the general population, along with more likely to be part of Trump's base. In addition, exit polls from Edison Research in 2016 showed veterans at the time backed Trump over challenger Hillary Clinton, 60% to 34%.
