Iraqi PM Claims Chevron Planned Iraq-Iran Oil Fields

Friday, 17 December 2010 07:29 AM

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki told U.S. diplomats that Chevron Corp. was in talks with the Iranian government about a cross-border oilfield, according to cables released by Wikileaks and reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The cable, sent in March 2009 from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and first reported by The Guardian, summarizes a conversation between U.S. diplomats and the Iraqi premier. Maliki asked the U.S. charge d’affaires whether a U.S. company would legally be able to operate a field underlying both sides of the Iraq-Iran border. The U.S. diplomat said that U.S. law on sanctions would prohibit it, according to the cable.

“The PM said he is currently in negotiations with Chevron to develop various oil fields, to include a cross-border oil field with Iran (NFI). The PM claimed that Chevron had told him that it had already raised the issue of a cross-border development with Tehran as well,” the cable said.

Chevron denies the allegations.
