‘Annihilation of Israel’ Goal of Iran Nuke Scientist

Wednesday, 22 February 2012 10:29 AM EST

The wife of Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, the Iranian nuclear scientist who was assassinated last month in Tehran, tells Iran’s semiofficial Fars News Agency that “Mostafa’s ultimate goal was the annihilation of Israel.” Ahmadi Roshan died after a magnetic bomb attached to his car by two men on motorcycles detonated during morning rush hour, also fatally injuring his driver.

The troubling claim will do little to alleviate tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, widely suspected by the international community of having military purposes, coupled with controversial statements by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that Israel should be “wiped off the map.”

Ahmadi-Roshan’s assassination was the latest in a string of covert attacks ostensibly meant to sabotage Iranian nuclear efforts, which the Islamic Republic insists are peaceful and non-military. However, the international community is not convinced, and has approved multiple rounds of increasingly severe sanctions on Iran, with the latest efforts targeting Iran’s energy sector.

Iran alleges that Israel’s Mossad is behind the string of attacks and has accused the Jewish state of recruiting members of Jundallah, an Iranian terrorist group, to carry out assassinations. Israeli diplomats in India, Thailand, Georgia, and elsewhere have recently been targeted by terrorist attacks, widely attributed to Iran.
