Russia appeared to soften its position on Ukraine this week, announcing it was pulling troops back from the border as President Vladimir Putin told pro-Russian separatists that they should delay Sunday’s planned referendum on sovereignty.
The change in tack, however, appears to be nothing more than a strategic pause, a "peredishka" (literally, "breathing space") that does not indicate a change of heart at the Kremlin.
