US Confident Israel Not to Blame for Hospital Blast

The U.S. has "high confidence" the cause of the deadly blast at a Gaza hospital last week was a failed rocket launch by a Palestinian militant group and not Israeli airstrikes, Politico reported.

U.S. intelligence officials who were granted anonymity to speak freely told reporters Tuesday that their assessment was based on analysis of videos that captured the rocket's flight, as well as examination of the damage to the hospital and surrounding area.

According to one official, analysis of videos taken in four locations showed the rocket was launched from inside Gaza and traveled northeast. Citing the assessment of analysts, one official said the motor combustion became "unstable" about 10 seconds after the launch.

"We can tell that, in part, based on the fluctuating intensity of the rocket plume," the official said. "About five seconds after that there's a flash in the video.

"There was a catastrophic motor failure that likely occurred, which separated the motor and the warhead," the official continued. "The warhead landed in the hospital compound and that was the second explosion and a much bigger one."

The effects of the blast were also used in making a determination about the munition's origin. The official said the damage at the site is consistent with what would be expected from a rocket, not the "large craters and broader blast effects" from a munition that was dropped from the sky.

"There was no observable damage to the main hospital building: no large impact craters, only light damage to the roots of the two structures near the main hospital building and both of them remained intact," the official said. "All of this is inconsistent with our assessment of what the damage would look like if this was an Israeli munition."

The officials also confirmed statements made by the Israeli Defense Forces, and said they had "low confidence" that the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad was responsible for the blast. According to the official, the assessment is based on Israeli-provided audio recordings of Hamas militants discussing who bombed the hospital. The video was "carefully vetted," the official said, but the speakers' identities and what they are discussing could not be confirmed.

There have also been no images or video of debris from Israeli munitions, the official said.

"If an Israeli munition was responsible for this blast, we would expect that Palestinian militants would be very directly and clearly showing what they thought was an Israeli munition," the official said.
