Toronto 'Crack Mayor' Ford Offers to Take Drug, Alcohol Tests

Toronto 'Crack Mayor' Ford Offers to Take Drug, Alcohol Tests

By    |   Tuesday, 10 December 2013 04:11 AM EST

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford says he is ready to take tests to prove he is not using alcohol and cocaine, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported.

Ford made that offer while taping a segment for “The Zoomer,” a weekly television show hosted by Canadian media veteran Conrad Black, which is scheduled to air Monday night.
Ford has come under heavy political fire for months after he admitted smoking crack cocaine.

The mayor, who has been stripped of many of his powers by the city council, attributes that behavior to living in a “drunken stupor.” He still plans to seek re-election next year.
Ford has promises get into shape and has been spotted in his office dressed in gym clothing covered with sweat. He says his days of drinking and drug use are over.

“If they want me to do a drug test, a urine test, I’ll do one right now,” Mayor Ford said in a clip from the interview.

Black replied that there was no need to do that, and Ford responded with howls of laughter.

The segment, taped Friday, had been scheduled for broadcast Dec. 16. But VisionTV, which airs the show, moved the interview ahead one week because of substantial public interest in the Ford saga.

Black criticized what he termed “piling on” against Ford, saying “he should be accorded a full presumption of innocence unless he is justly convicted. Beyond that his accusers should put up or shut up.”

The interview will likely highlight parallels between the pair’s brushes with the criminal justice system, The Globe and Mail noted in a separate story. Ford has undergone a long police investigation and faced many questions over his admission to using cocaine.

Black has blasted critics in the U.S. justice system and the media for their coverage of a criminal case that sent him to prison on fraud and other counts.
