Gas Guzzlers Jam UAE Climate Conference

Thursday, 21 January 2010 12:51 AM EST

ABU DHABI - Hundreds of SUVs and other gas guzzlers stand in the multi-story parking lot of the venue where world leaders have gathered at the largest regional summit on renewable energy, stopping global warming and saving the environment.

While inside the packed Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), big enough to hold nearly eight football fields, the intention is to save the environment, the parking lot tells a different story.

“This summit is a wonderful platform to solve environmental problems,” a delegate from a European country told Maktoob News about the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), which boasted 9,000 delegates on Monday, including kings, princes, premiers, ministers and chief executives.

“But with regard to the environment, people generally don’t do as they say.”

WFES organiser Reed told Maktoob News that attendees were urged to carpool, use shuttle buses or come in groups in taxis.

“It is a challenge to change someone’s habit,” said Ara Fernezian, the director of the World Future Energy Summit. “There are some things we are not used to in this part of the world.”
