Search for 'White Widow' Jihadist Continues in Somalia

By    |   Tuesday, 19 November 2013 07:14 AM EST

Authorities searching for “White Widow” jihadist Samantha Lewthwaite are investigating reports that she is hiding in Baidoa, a city in south central Somalia, the Daily Mirror reported.

A security source called the reported sighting “one of the most credible intelligence reports received in a long time” on her location.

There is concern that Lewthwaite, 29, could be on her way to Yemen, an al-Qaida stronghold. She is known as the White Widow because her late husband, Jermaine Lindsay, was one of four terrorists who blew themselves up in a coordinated series of suicide attacks in London on July 7, 2005, killing 52 people and injuring 700.

Reports that Lewthwaite may be in Baidoa follow a Daily Mirror report published Saturday which said she is wanted in connection with seven unsolved murders in Kenya.

Her victims allegedly include two Protestant pastors and two radical Islamist clerics.

Lewthwaite is said to have angered senior members of the Somali jihadist group al-Shabab by demanding more authority over its operations.

A Kenyan intelligence report obtained by Sky News last month indicates that Lewthwaite had been a key figure in al-Shabab who had been involved in plotting a series of attacks on U.N. offices in Nairobi, the Kenyan Parliament and restaurants.

The plot also included assassinations of Kenyan politicians.

In her personal diary, Lewthwaite writes about how two of her children want to emulate their father — Jermaine Lindsay, the suicide bomber. She expresses gratitude for the fact that she was   married to a shaheed (martyr).

In July 2012, the Daily Mirror published excerpts from Lewthwaite’s personal blog, in which she wrote that “I am woman [sic] who believes in Jihad and supremacy of Islam.”
