As Scottish voters weigh in on national independence, separatist groups inside the United States are nodding in approval, hoping efforts abroad will translate into acceptance of secessionist votes at home, the Global Post reported.

Among those cheering the Scots on are the Texas Nationalist Movement, which is pushing for that state to secede from the U.S., and the Alaskan Independence Party, which seeks a similar goal.

"Secession can be contagious," wrote the Texas group on its website in a post titled "Scotland is Paving the Way for Texas Independence," according to the Post.

"Look at what happened when the southern States of America began to break away," the Post said. "One by one, they followed. The same thing happened in the early 1990’s when the Soviet bloc fell … Don’t be surprised if you don’t hear much about this historic, ground breaking vote that may have repercussions across the civilized world."

As the world watches Scottish voters go to the polls amid what is expected to be a close vote, Lynette Clark, who chairs the Alaskan Independence Party, told Business Insider her group is paying careful attention. She thinks the vote will pass.

"I think it's going to be a big surprise to the British Empire," said Clark.

"The destiny of Alaska is to be an independent nation," Clark said. "Alaskans have been working for their independence and less dependence for over 35 years. It's a drop in the bucket compared to what Scotland has had to endure, but more Alaskans are looking to see that fascism is alive and well in Washington DC."

Other similar-minded Americans are also watching in Vermont, Slate magazine noted.

“The Scottish referendum has really captured a lot of attention and helped make secession look like a viable and sexy alternative to empire and centralization,” Vermont resident Rob Williams, who hopes his state can return to an independent republic, told reporter David Weigel.

“We’re not talking about secession in Yemen or Sudan, or some place Americans consider less relatable. We’re talking about Scotland!"

Williams added of the possibilities: "Making secession sexy in the West is fantastic. If the Scots do vote to secede, it proves that some Western nation under the yoke of empire can exercise its sovereignty and choose to leave."
