Russia flew three nuclear-capable bombers close to Japan on Wednesday, for the first time in three months, U.S. officials told Fox News.

Three Tu-95 "Bear" bombers launched from an eastern Russia base in Ukrainka, where Russia's largest fleet of strategic bombers is housed.

An IL-20 spy plane was along for the flight with the three bombers. The flight was "clearly meant to send a message," one official told Fox News.

Japan scrambled fighter jets in response to the bombers, according to The Daily Mail.

Japanese officials said the Russian aircraft did not trespass into Japanese territory, according to Daily Mail's report.

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson Wednesday.
