Great Britain's Prince Charles drew parallels between the rise of "populist groups" and Hitler's Nazi party during an interview Thursday.

Prince Charles, who is next in line to England's throne, made the remark on BBC Radio.

The prince said his parents' generation "fought and died in a battle against intolerance, monstrous extremism, and an inhuman attempt to exterminate the Jewish population of Europe," according to NBC News, which published a partial transcript of his appearance.

"That nearly 70 years later we should still be seeing such evil persecution is to me beyond all belief. We owe it to those who suffered and died so horribly not to repeat the horrors of the past."

The prince added that the "rise of many populist groups across the world that are increasingly aggressive to those who adhere to a minority faith . . . has deeply disturbing echoes of the dark days of the 1930s."

President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to do more to keep Americans safe in the face of radical Islamic terrorism. He reiterated that pledge this week in the wake of a deadly attack at a Christmas market in Berlin that left 12 people dead and nearly 50 wounded.

Trump's critics point to some of the people who have been selected to serve in his administration — including chief strategist Stephen Bannon — as an example of what they feel is a staff with white nationalist beliefs.

In the face of Trump's tough talk on terrorism and his desire to keep better track of people who visit the U.S. from countries with terror ties, President Barack Obama will kill a registry that was designed to do just that.
