Peres: A Nuclear Iran Would Be 'Catastrophe'

Thursday, 23 February 2012 12:28 PM

Israeli President Shimon Peres underscored Thursday that a nuclear Iran would be nothing short of a catastrophe, and Israel retains the right to defend itself, reports Haaretz.

“Israel is an independent country and has the right to defend itself against dangers,” Peres said during a speech to the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations in Jerusalem.

“A nuclear Iran would be a catastrophe,” Peres stressed, adding that if Iran had a nuclear weapon, “it would be impossible to prevent it from exporting terror freely or stop it from controlling the world economy.”

Peres’ comments come on the heels of speculation that the Israeli president is expected to tell President Barack Obama that an attack on Iran by Israel would be a mistake.

“When we say that all options are on the table on Iran, we really mean it.”
