A Dominican nun in Spain is reportedly getting death threats for suggesting Mary wasn't a virgin, and that she and Joseph had sex like any "normal couple."
Contradicting Roman Catholic teachings about the "virgin birth," Sister Lucia Caram told a television program, Chester in Love Show, the teaching is "hard to believe and hard to take in," the Guardian reported.
"I think Mary was in love with Joseph and that they were a normal couple — and having sex is a normal thing," said the nun, who lives in a convent in Catalonia, the Guardian reported. "We've ended up with the rules we've invented without getting to the true message."
According to the Guardian, the nun's comments were denounced, and a reminder was issued that Mary's virginity is not up for debate.
"When asked about the Virgin Mary, I said that, as I see it, Mary obviously loved Joseph . . . I wanted to say that it wouldn't shock me if she had had a normal couple's relationship with Joseph, her husband," Caram countered in a statement translated by the Guardian — reporting she'd gotten death threats.
"If anyone is offended or hurt by my attitudes or thoughts, I apologize," she wrote, the Guardian reported. "I am not indifferent to suffering of any kind."
