Mexican soccer fans appear to have caused a minor earthquake as they celebrated the goal that defeated defending champion Germany 1-0 in an opening match of the World Cup on Sunday, The Washington Examiner reported.

The earthquake was detected on the Richter scale in Mexico City by massive jumping by ecstatic fans when Hirving "Chucky" Lozano scored a goal at the 35th minute of the game, according to seismologists and Mexican authorities.

Mexicans were particularly excited as they won the match as a +600 underdog, making their victory the biggest upset of the tournament so far, according to New York Magazine.

Southern California Earthquake Center Director John Vidale told USA Today that such fan-induced earthquakes could produce at most a two on the Richter Scale, a measurement which is normally not even noticed by the public.

Some Mexican soccer fans took great pride in the reports of their cheering causing an earthquake, according to Newsweek.

One such fan posted his enthusiasm on Twitter.
