LIGNET: Terrorist Haven in Northern Mali a Threat to the West

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s suggestion in her speech to the UN last week that Islamist militants from northern Mali may have been involved on the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi turned the spotlight on this terrorist haven in the middle of West Africa. Islamists grabbed control of northern Mali earlier this year after government troops abandoned their posts and went to the capital to overthrow the government. Islamist fighters from all over Africa and the Middle East are now using it as a base of operations from which to challenge the West. A regional African force may intervene next year. But it could be too late.
